Hello! My name is Heidi Unger and I’m an aspiring author. Currently, I’m studying creative writing at Western Washington University.
My writing journey started when I was in middle school and decided to write a romance between myself and my crush amidst a zombie apocalypse. You know, the usual. At first, I was just doing it because my friends were, but soon it become something so much more. Everyday after school, I would sprint home, desperately trying to beat my family members to our shared desktop. Writing became a positive coping mechanism while dealing with many personal tragedies that I faced while a preteen. And you know what? It still is. Having a creative outlet, I can turn to has been so instrumental in my mental health journey and has shaped me as a person.
Sadly, I no longer write cringy, self-insert zombie stories. My current passion is writing diverse, new-adult romcoms with emphasis on mental health and the importance of found families in the queer community. I am drawn to creating stories around characters who are roughly between the ages of 18 and 22 because this can be such a time for transition and discovering hidden truths (or lies) about those who you thought you knew.
Books that have really inspired my journey have been Red, White, and Royal Blue, The Space Between Worlds, and Carry On.
I strive to give readers a safe place to feel comfortable in a world that so often tells them they’re wrong, like those books have given me.
