Where Did We Sit On the Bus? by Brian Quijada is an impactful play in the present-day as it examines the fact that people don’t always fit in societal boxes. Quijada uses creative twists to tell his story in a humorous and immersive way.
Quijada examines identity as a son of two immigrants while using an intriguing mix of light and dark humor. In this outstanding solo performance, he recounts instances where he’s encountered racism, both subtle and obvious, while incorporating music.
I found reading this play to be an experience like no other as normal, everyday things are described in fresh, gripping, and imaginative ways. I loved the way Quijada’s music was fast and rhythmic; you could tell lots of care went into this craft.
Overall, this play was entirely unique and I cannot imagine how much work he put into it as a solo performance. This play will demand your attention from the very first lines and not let you go.
One day, when the world returns to normal or we find a new normal, I am greatly looking forward to witnessing how Quijada’s authentic play has influenced the theater community.
